Recently, I realised that it was time for me to get a proper bluetooth handsfree for driving. So I surfed the web again looking for a bargain. After researching for a trustworthy bluetooth, I settled on the reliable BlueAnt Z9i. I found the headset on eBay for just $16.99 + postage (came to roughly $37). The RRP price for a brand new Z9i is $99. So, it’s definitely a good buy.
The headset was advertised as a never-used unit. It also came with a free gift — 3 replacement ear gels (sized L, M & S). I thought this was a great bargain because the replacement ear gels can be handy.
I waited for about 2 weeks to get the headset. When it finally arrived, I tried out fitting the Small ear gel. After struggling for 30 minutes, I finally gave up. The original one fits my ear so I really didn’t have to replace it but I just want to find out if the ear gels really work.
So I wrote to the seller, asking for instructions on how to fit one of those ear gels on. To my amazement, the seller replied telling me not to replace the ear gels because they are not for Z9i.
They explained that these gels were for one of the Jawbone bluetooth headset models. They gave them out as free gifts because they initially thought they would fit so ordered a lot of them to sell. But when they tried it out, they really don’t fit at all. So, they gave them out as free gifts since they had many of them lying around. They continued to tell me if I didn’t want the gels, I could return them and they would refund me AUD3.
They even warned me not to use them on my Z9i.
Right, how dumb was the seller? They charged me $3 for something that won’t even work properly on my frigging Z9i. I of course didn’t really return the gels. I pretty much will put them in the bin.
Now, why bother with the free gift? The concept of free means there’s no charge. I seriously LOL’ed
when they told me “please do not use it on the Z9i”.
I didn’t make it difficult for them of course, I just accepted their reply and left 5-star feedback on their eBay too. I did pay 1/3 of the price for the headset, and it works beautifully (for now). So, I shouldn’t complain about the price. I’m merely amazed at how the term “free gift” can be misused like that.
Oh well…
